![]() Spartans were renowned to have the largest shields in the Greek world and even the hoplite shield of the 'average' non-Spartan Hoplite was bigger than that. I was little worried of the trailer with the Greek Stats DLC, when it showed the Spartan Hoplite and his shield. This unit can hide in forests until enemy units get too close. I am a very wierd guy that likes to see actual size hoplite shields. The unit will try to stay in formation when in melee. It can also rally after routing more often. They were armed with a short sword and an iron-tipped spear with a bronze counterbalance butt-spike. During the Greco-Persian Wars most hoplites wore a Corinthian-style bronze helm, and a cuirass of bronze or stiffened linen or canvas. ![]() This unit does not suffer a morale penalty when the general dies. Hoplites date back to the wars between the Greek city-states in the 8th and 7th centuries BC. The unit moves into close wall formation. ![]() Many armies adopted the phalanx of hoplites as a tactical unit because it was very successful in battle. Later, under Phillip II of Macedon and Alexander the Great, the shield became smaller, while the spear developed into the five metre sarissa pike. While all hoplites were originally citizen-soldiers, full-time mercenaries took over and became the standard fighting unit of the Greek world. When closed up, each man would find shelter behind the shield of his neighbour, creating a wall of bristling spear-points. The hoplon-and-spear combination required them to fight as a phalanx, a block of spearmen some eight ranks deep. Hoplites were named, though, after the round hoplon shield they carried. Note: Hoplites, Shield Walls & Pikes still have their own specific TtS rules in addition to the above.Hoplites date back to the wars between the Greek city-states in the 8th and 7th centuries BC. Depiction: 3-4 ranks of miniatures (4 ranks looks best). Depiction: 2-3 ranks of miniatures.Ĭause: Phalanx & Deep. (You really need to go to 16 rank depth and beyond to count as 'deep'.) So the Cause was 'Phalanx'.Ĭause: Phalanx. Hoplites' depth ranged from 8-12 as the default norm again, either identical or slightly deeper than a 'regular' 8 rank depth of a cohort. Actual 'depth' was approx 6 ranks as a default norm for shield wall - that's less than a Roman cohort's 8 rank depth (listed as 'regular' in TtS). The Cause was because it fought in a super-tight formation of shields and spears (or axes): a Phalanx. The Cause however is not necessarily because the unit was deeper than the norm, i.e. The Effect in TtS can be whatever the 'Deep' rule entails: greater staying power but penalties to maneuver. The Theban phalanx at Leuctra is still Exceptionally Deep (or Exceptional Phalanx) as per rules. Note: Pikes are already depicted with at least 3 ranks of miniatures and have their own added benefit. The other Phalangites who needed extra depth beyond the norm to compete are depicted with 3 ranks of miniatures. Spartans) didn't need extra depth beyond the 'norm', so are depicted with 2 ranks of miniatures. *It does still simulate the distinction between better hoplite/shield wall Phalanx troops and those who went deeper to compete with the former. it's lumping them all rather neatly together and somewhat blurring (*see below) the distinction. It won't please those preferring the flexibility offered by the regular and deeper formations where the latter get a bonus to their resilience (with penalty to maneuver), but it does prevent those in regular depth from avoiding penalties to maneuver at the expense of extra staying power. Not some added depth to the formation beyond 6-12 ranks. So this is saying that it's their tight formation (wall of sharp pointy things and shields + specific training) that provides the staying power and reduced maneuvering. Note: if depicting Hoplites in 3 ranks, Pikes would look better in 4. Hoplites, Pikes and Shield Wall still benefit from their own idiosyncratic bonuses as listed in the rules. Pikes may be depicted on the table with 3-4 ranks of miniatures. Hoplites and Shield Wall 'Phalanxes' may be depicted on the table in 2-3 ranks of miniatures. by kulmexarendless last updated a month ago (Patch 32.0) 12 1 104,720. Works the same as 'deep' with extra staying power and worse maneuvering. Hoplites, Pikes and Shield Wall all count as 'Phalanx'.
